Oral Sedation Dentistry

Sadly, up to 75% of adults in the U.S. experience some degree of dental fear. However, one million other people have conquered that same fear with a safe and effective treatment called Oral Sedation Dentistry.

By prescribing a series of medications, our doctors can induce in patients a level of deep, but conscious sedation during their treatment. The doctor will prescribe a pill for you to take the night before your appointment that will help you relax and sleep peacefully. The doctor will prescribe another pill for you to take the morning of your appointment. This pill will further relax you and will begin to create an amnesic condition for you. After you arrive at your appointment, the doctor will continuously monitor your level of relaxation, and he may give you additional doses of relaxation medication throughout your appointment. We constantly monitor your vital signs, and a reversal agent is always nearby, so the oral sedation process is very safe. Patients are relaxed before, during, and after their appointment, and due to the amnesic properties of the medications, patients usually have little-to-no memory of their time in the dental chair.

Only a select few general dentists in Southern Indiana are qualified to sedate patients at this level. For more information on oral sedation dentistry, contact our office, or visit the consumer website www.sedationcare.com.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide is a gaseous mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, and it is sometimes called “laughing gas”, or simply “nitrous”. Nitrous is inhaled through a plastic mask that is placed over your nose. Some patients prefer to use nitrous only during a part of their appointment, while others choose to use nitrous for their entire procedure.

Most patients report that nitrous helps them relax. You may feel tingling, warmth or grogginess. In general, nitrous give you a “feel good” effect, like a euphoria. The effects of nitrous begin within minutes of your first breaths. The effects of nitrous end within minutes of removing the mask, so you may safely drive and return to work or school immediately after your appointment.

The Wand®

The Wand® is a computer-assisted anesthesia system. Instead of numbing patients with a shot from a large syringe, our doctors and hygienists can administer the anesthesia with a tiny needle. The injection pressure is computer-controlled, making the process virtually pain-free. Our patients have nicknamed this device “the magic wand!” because it has changed their opinion of injections.

The Experience

We use lavender aromatherapy throughout our office to inspire relaxation. We want you to be comfortable, so we provide blankets, pillows and warm towels to patients. There are no televisions blaring cartoons or news bulletins in our office; no one needs that level of anxiety! Instead, you may listen to one of our personal music devices throughout your appointment, providing a welcome distraction from the sounds of dentistry. We never forget that you are a person, and we care for you like we would care for our own family.
